Offshore Coiled Tubing Unit Offers Flexibility and Efficiency

CT SEAS coiled tubing safer, efficient, automated solutions reduce the amount of time and the number of people needed. The CT SEAS highly flexible, fit-for-purpose unit is readily adaptable for many offshore structures, including platforms, floaters, and tension leg platforms. This high degree of flexibility gives you the full capabilities of a conventional coiled tubing (CT) unit.
A key philosophy driving the design architecture was the creation of safer, efficient, and functional skid packages. The system comprises just 10 primary skids, which reduce crane lifts from 53 to only 36 on a typical operation in the North Sea.
This reduction in lifts is achieved by delivering many components to the wellsite as assembled units. For example, riser and triple BOP components travel as preassembled and tested units, and the injector is assembled to the jacking frame and stripper with the gooseneck attached.

Offshore Coiled Tubing Total Compensation Package Increases Safety and Efficiency

CT TComp coiled tubing (CT) total compensation system for offshore protects wellhead integrity during CT operations by limiting wellhead stresses. The system compensates for vertical and horizontal wellhead motion inside or outside the derrick. Rig up is faster and requires less personnel than with conventional systems.
The system is preassembled in three skids, one each for the hydraulic power unit, BOP, and injector. Fewer than half the minimum number of lifts are required to load conventional equipment onto the platform. All components are delivered, installed, and tested within their frames without requiring unpacking or assembly. Virtually every feature is designed to save time and reduce costs.

    PowerCLEAN engineered fill removal service cleans previously uncleanable tools at up to 325 degF. The service integrates an optimized jetting nozzle and cleanout fluids with job-planning software and real-time monitoring.
    This coiled tubing service can remove produced sand and fines, proppant left behind after fracturing, or excess gravel from gravel-packing operations efficiently and completely. Our service leaves the tools fully open for maximum hydrocarbon production and problem-free tool runs.

    Clean deviated and horizontal sections

    Significant amounts of fill are often left in highly deviated or horizontal tools sections when you use conventional cleanout nozzles. PowerCLEAN nozzle technology agitates the solids, entrains them in the cleanout fluid, and prevents particles from falling back past the nozzle.
    The result is quick and complete solids removal at lower flow rates than conventional nozzles allow. With the PowerCLEAN service, effective cleaning is possible at flow rates as low as 1 bbl/min for 7-in casing and 2 bbl/min for 9 5/8-in casing at any deviation angle.

    CoilFLATE Through-Tubing Inflatable Packer

    Reliable Zonal Isolation

    Designed for extreme conditions, the CoilFLATE coiled tubing (CT) through-tubing inflatable anchoring packer extends critical zonal isolation capability to previously inaccessible, chemically harsh, and high-temperature environments. The CoilFLATE packer eliminates the need for a workover rig because the packer is run on either coiled tubing or jointed pipe into vertical, deviated or horizontal tools. Remedial operations can be performed without killing the well.

    Applications

    By deploying the CoilFLATE packer, you can permanently abandon zones or temporarily isolate tools areas for tubing integrity testing, wellhead testing, and general pressure testing in openhole and cased hole wells. The packer's resistance against aggressive chemicals lets you selectively place treatment fluids for acid stimulation, water control, and chemical treatment.

    Safety

    The CoilFLATE design keeps the packer anchored in place, providing a reliable high-pressure seal at large inflation ratios (2:1 at 5,000 psi, 3:1 at 2,000 psi). It also allows extended assembly exposure at temperatures up to 375 degF under harsh tools conditions and in almost any chemical environment.

    Vantage Coiled Tubing Logging Head System

    Designed to standardize electric-line coiled tubing (CT) connectivity, the Vantage CT logging head saves you rig-up time through reliability, modular interchangeability, and the unique design of the bayonet CT connector.
    Vantage can be used for mono-conductor logging applications as well as with most perforating configurations. The system's modular component concept connects with plug-and-play connections that physically and electrically couple the components. These connections enable rapid interchangeability and reduce nonproductive time. The use of the CT flush OD bayonet connector in combination with the Vantage termination tool enables pretermination of the electrical connection before the CT is stabbed through the injector head chains. Highly reliable, the Vantage system can perform multiple runs in hole without redressing.
    The Vantage system is designed for offshore, land, desert, and arctic environments and for oil, gas, and injector wells. It is rated for working pressure of 13,500 psi, maximum temperature of 375 degF, and maximum tensile strength of 40,000 lbm.

    Packers, Hangers, Plugs, and Accessories

    Packers and plugs are run to hydraulically isolate the sections above and below the packer and to provide a mechanical anchor to prevent the packer from sliding inside the wellbore. In coiled tubing (CT) completion applications, the packer also holds the CT string in place.
    Packers are set mechanically, hydraulically, or on wireline. The mechanical-set packer is set by applying either tension or compression on the packer. The hydraulic-set packer is activated by hydraulic pressure. The CoilTOOLS hydraulic set-packers can also be set on wireline.
    The CoilTOOLS suite of packers includes the entire range of packers and plugs used in wellbore treatments, selective stimulation, water conformance jobs, tubing integrity testing, CT completions, straddle repair installations, temporary or permanent well abandonment, and more.
    Whenever packers or plugs are run, the downhole hydraulic and mechanical situation must be known. The shear pin setting must be high enough to withstand the additional forces resulting from applied differential pressure, yet low enough to allow a safe release of the packer. An equalizing tool or unloader valve may be needed to safely unset the packers.

    Discovery MLT Multilateral Reentry System

    Discovery MLT multilateral reentry system is cost-effective and operationally simple for maximizing performance of multilateral wells. The system sends a pressure signal to the surface confirming you've accessed the correct lateral.
    Adjusting the suborientation, or bend, from surface and the real-time feedback to surface of window identification save a substantial amount of time. This significantly increases the chance of successful reentry on the first attempt. Only one run to the bottom of the lateral is required for confirmation.

    Discovery MLT software

    Using Discovery MLT software, you can display several essential parameters, such as the tool orientation relative to the lateral window. The application also monitors previous indexes and guides you through indexing cycles for accurate, real-time information downhole.
    After the window is profiled, the software memorizes the window orientation and monitors the BHA orientation, facilitating the location of other windows.

      Wireline Perforating

      Wireline (or electric line) is the traditional way to run perforating guns, providing the advantages of real-time depth control and selectivity. Guns can be run either before the completion is run (casing guns) or through the completion (through-tubing guns). Today any type of perforating gun can be run on wireline including strip guns, casing guns, scallop guns, Pivot guns, Enerjet guns, TCP guns, or oriented guns. Many other explosive devices can also be run, including plug and packer setting tools, cutters, backoff bars, and severing tools.

      Perforating Gun Systems and Charges

      Schlumberger offers capsule and hollow carrier gun systems with a wide variety of perforating charges for every environment as before.

      Completion Perforating

      Completion perforating enables large, long strings of guns to be installed with the completion and fired with the right completion fluid in place for immediate cleanup and production.

      After firing, the guns are normally dropped into the rathole or left connected to the completion, in which case production is through perforated tailpipe. Additional hardware such as automatic drop subs, shock absorbers, valves, and debris subs can be included in the string.

      Before Completion Perforating

      Perforating guns can be run before the completion to position guns that are larger than the ID of the tubing. In vertical or deviated wells, guns can be hung off in the liner using a MAXR anchor. When the guns are fired, the anchor automatically releases to drop the guns into the rathole.

      In a monobore completion, the guns and anchor can also be recovered to the surface. In horizontal wells, guns can be placed in the horizontal section before the upper completion is run by using disconnect devices run below coiled tubing or drillpipe.

      Completion Perforating Without Killing the Well

      The CWOK process uses underbalance, dynamic underbalance (PURE), or extreme underbalance perforating for clean perforations, then removes the guns without killing the well.

      A typical well kill may damage clean perforations unless very carefully designed pills are developed. CWOK includes the following techniques:

      • Through tubing perforating (wireline or slickline)
      • X-Tools to drop guns into the rathole
      • FIV to isolate the reservoir and enable long gun strings to be recovered to surface
      • CIRP to connect and disconnect long gun strings under pressure
      • GunStack to run and stack guns on anchors

      Other techniques include running isolation plugs through the completion in order to recover DST strings, and PerfPac, which allows completion of gravel packs without killing the well.

      Slickline Perforating

      Slickline can be used for perforating, setting plugs or packers, or cutting tubing. Slickline operations are normally fast and use simple pressure control equipment. Slickline units occupy a small footprint on rigs or platforms and can be transported easily.

      The eFire-Slickline firing head is used to fire guns or initiate setting tools. This electronic device is simple to use and has many useful features including full operator control to arm, fire, abort, and rearm if needed.

      Coiled Tubing Perforating

      Coiled Tubing (CT) provides additional perforating capability and flexibility over other conveyance systems. The rigidity and strength of CT allows enduring greater tensile and compressive forces, which is a major operational advantage when perforating in highly deviated and horizontal wells or with longer gun strings.

      CT perforating is ideal for live wells; pressure control techniques are used to run long gun strings and either drop off or retrieve the guns without having to kill the well.

      In subsea wells, the subsea lubricator defines the length of gun that can be run. With other wells, the surface riser or surface lubricator valve determines the length of gun. The CIRP deployment system can be used in conjunction with CT to deploy and retrieve guns under pressure.

      In depleted wells where drawdown is insufficient, nitrogen can be circulated at convenience to lighten the overall fluid column, increasing the drawdown at the zone of interest. The resulting pressure differential is similar to that produced by gas lift systems.

      For accurate depth control, CT wired with integrated electrical cable is run in combination with a casing collar locator and a gamma ray detector. Optional real-time and memory sensors for pressure and temperature are used to monitor the required underbalance.

      There are several ways to activate guns run with CT: hydraulic delay firing heads; drop ball firing heads; eFire-CT firing system using circulation rates; or electrically using "stiff-wire" CT, where an electric line cable is run through the CT to enable firing the guns in a similar manner to a wireline job.

      Stiff-wire CT allows the use of standard wireline correlation tools. Hydraulic CT allows stimulation fluids to be pumped without the risk of damaging a wireline cable.

      An additional specialty gun is the pump-over gun. This gun allows circulation through a special sleeve on the outside of the gun to the bottom of the string. The pump-over gun is used during fracture operations in horizontal wells to save a cleanout trip between fracturing and perforating the next interval.

      Tubing-Conveyed Perforating

      Tubing-conveyed perforating (TCP) completion techniques enable perforating very long intervals in one run—some TCP strings have exceeded 8,000 ft [2,440 m] in length—and in highly deviated and horizontal wells TCP is the only means of accessing to the perforating depth. TCP also facilitates running large guns and using high underbalance. When TCP is deployed in conjunction with drillstem test (DST) tools, well fluids can be easily controlled. Without having to kill the well, TCP strings can be retrieved (shoot and pull) or left as part of the permanent completion (integrated TCP).
      TCP Applications
      Your choice of tubing-conveyed perforating (TCP) string design will vary depending on your completion type: temporary, permanent, or workover. The strings listed below include only the most common components for different TCP applications. Your Schlumberger representative can advise you on the most efficient string configuration for your application.

      1-Firing Systems

      BCF Ball-Activated Firing Head

      The small-diameter coiled tubing (CT) firing head is recommended for use in guns 49.9 mm (1.69 in) or smaller in diameter.
      CBF Circulation Ball Drop-Activated Firing Head

      The most commonly used CT firing head, the CBF is available with multiple adapters to accommodate various CT dimensions and gun sizes. The head is insensitive to water-hammer effects and vertical drops.
      DFS Differential Pressure Firing System

      The DFS activates the differential pressure firing head by using the pressure created between the annulus pressure above the packer and the cushion or sump pressure below the packer.
      BHF Drop-Bar Hydrostatic Firing Head

      The drop-bar hydrostatic firing (BHF) head has a firing pin that is driven by hydrostatic pressure and does not depend on the intensity of drop-bar impact. Its features minimize the possibility of accidental firing and prevent and release trapped pressure.
      eFire Electronic Firing Head System

      eFire electronic firing head systems for coiled tubing, TCP and wireline provide a more efficient and economical method for a wide range of downhole explosive operations.
      EOFH Extreme Overbalanced Firing Head

      3- TCP Gun Release Systems

      CTXR Closed Tubing Explosive-Actuated Release

      Automatically drops tubing-conveyed perforating (TCP) guns at the instant of detonation to the well bottom after the guns are fired. When the guns are fired in a closed system in which the tubing pressure is less than the wellbore pressure, the CTXR gun release disconnects the TCP guns.
      CTR Controlled Tension Release

      Allows retrieval of the running assembly if guns become stuck. The CTR is a fullbore safety release device for TCP operations. Pulling on the string with a predetermined tension and holding this tension for a predetermined time actuates the CTR.
      MAXR Auto Release Gun Anchor

      Primarily used to anchor high-shot-density (HSD) gun strings in monobore wells. The MAXR can be run in the hole with either wireline or pipe and is set with standard setting equipment.
      SXAR Automatic Gun Release

      Automatically drops tubing-conveyed perforating guns to the well bottom after the guns are fired. A full-tubing opening exists after the gun string is dropped, and the tailpipe incorporates a muleshoe entry wireline guide. Firing heads and no-gos are dropped as one piece for easy fishing.
      TCR Tubing-Conveyed Gun Release

      Enables TCP guns to be dropped off the end of the running string, allowing access to the perforated zone for stimulation, production logging, squeezing, or additional perforating. After the guns have dropped, the release housing acts as a tubing reentry guide.
      WXAR Automatic Gun Release with X-Tools Technology

      Automatically drops perforating guns at the instant of detonation. The WXAR, which extends the length of the gun strings that can be conveyed into the well, can be run on for wireline, tubing, or coiled tubing. Use of the WXAR enables long intervals to be perforated at underbalanced pressure without killing the well

      Pipe Recovery and Remedial Services

      Schlumberger provides several solutions for recovering casing, drillpipe, coiled tubing, or tubing.

      After the free point is determined, stuck drillpipe can be loosened by using an explosive backoff or cut with severing or colliding tools.

      Well completions can be recovered by using mechanical, explosive, electrical, or chemical cutters. Tubing can be cut in several places, but usually above the packer so that the packer can be milled and fished.

      • Casing and drillpipe cutters—Specialized explosive cutters are designed specifically for cutting casing (well abandonment) and drillpipe (stuck pipe recovery).

      • Chemical cutters—Chemical cutters provide a clean cut for severing coiled tubing, drillpipe, and tubing.

      • Mechanical cutters—Mechanical cutters are used to effectively cut casing, coiled tubing, drillpipe, and tubing when explosive or chemical cutters are not an option.

      • Severing, colliding, and split-shot tools—Severing or colliding tools contain high explosive loads to rupture and split heavyweight drillpipe and drill collars for pipe recovery.

      Hollow Carrier Gun Perforating Systems

      Hollow carrier guns are pressure-tight steel tubes in which shaped charges are positioned. For gun ODs of 2 7/8 in and larger, hollow carrier guns perform better than exposed guns because they use larger charges, optimized phasing, and increased shot density. Hollow carrier guns are also used when debris is unacceptable and in hostile conditions that preclude using exposed guns.

      Schlumberger hollow carrier guns are designed as systems, comprising specific carriers, charges, detonating cords, and boosters, to provide maximum perforator performance. All Schlumberger gun systems are manufactured to our rigorous QA standards. The main types of hollow carrier guns are

      PowerJet Omega

      PowerJet Omega

      PowerJet Omega deep penetrating shaped charge is the latest-generation PowerJet shaped charge from Schlumberger.

      On average, PowerJet Omega shaped charges produce a 20% increase in penetration depth compared with the performance of previous-generation shaped charges. Performance is verified through the official American Petroleum Institute perforation registration program, API RP 19B. This deeper penetration translates to increased well production and injection, coupled with improved well efficiency for a positive impact on lifting costs.

      The PowerJet Omega shaped charge is available for 2-in to 7-in HSD High Shot Density gun systems. HSD gun systems can be conveyed by wireline, slickline, tubing-conveyed perforating (TCP), coiled tubing, tractors, and permanent completions. PowerJet Omega shaped charges are also used with underbalanced perforating operations or the dynamic underbalanced technique of the PURE perforating system for clean perforations.

      PURE Perforating for Ultimate Reservoir Exploitation system optimizes the well dynamic underbalance—the transient underbalance just after creation of the perforation cavity. The software specifies a unique perforating system and optimum completion process. This controls the optimum dynamic underbalance rather than relying on the estimated reservoir pressure. This technique has been successfully performed in hard- and soft-rock formations, oil and gas reservoirs, and sandstones and carbonates.

      An Alaskan water injection well was performing below expectations. The 90 ft of perforations were taking 17,500 B/D. Analysis of the well and reservoir conditions by PURE design software resulted in a job design using 3 3/8-in. guns and PowerJet deep penetrating shaped charges.Although only a 20-ft section was perforated, the injection rate increased to 25,000 B/D. The injection pressure remained approximately the same or slightly lower. The injection profile shows clearly the PURE perforations were taking 93% of the total flow for an improvement of 493% in the contribution rate.Two low-permeability (1-mD) gas wells in the Weber formation of Wyoming were perforated with PURE technology at initial overbalances of 3000 and 3700 psi. Both wells flowed naturally at 5.5 and 3.8 MMscf/D, respectively, without the acid stimulation usually needed to obtain clean perforations. The wells were tubing-conveyed perforating permanent completions.
