Hollow Carrier Gun Perforating Systems
Hollow carrier guns are pressure-tight steel tubes in which shaped charges are positioned. For gun ODs of 2 7/8 in and larger, hollow carrier guns perform better than exposed guns because they use larger charges, optimized phasing, and increased shot density. Hollow carrier guns are also used when debris is unacceptable and in hostile conditions that preclude using exposed guns.
Schlumberger hollow carrier guns are designed as systems, comprising specific carriers, charges, detonating cords, and boosters, to provide maximum perforator performance. All Schlumberger gun systems are manufactured to our rigorous QA standards. The main types of hollow carrier guns are
PowerJet Omega
PowerJet Omega
PowerJet Omega deep penetrating shaped charge is the latest-generation PowerJet shaped charge from Schlumberger.
On average, PowerJet Omega shaped charges produce a 20% increase in penetration depth compared with the performance of previous-generation shaped charges. Performance is verified through the official American Petroleum Institute perforation registration program, API RP 19B. This deeper penetration translates to increased well production and injection, coupled with improved well efficiency for a positive impact on lifting costs.
The PowerJet Omega shaped charge is available for 2-in to 7-in HSD High Shot Density gun systems. HSD gun systems can be conveyed by wireline, slickline, tubing-conveyed perforating (TCP), coiled tubing, tractors, and permanent completions. PowerJet Omega shaped charges are also used with underbalanced perforating operations or the dynamic underbalanced technique of the PURE perforating system for clean perforations.
Benefits
- Penetrates past formation damage, increasing well productivity or injectivity
- Maintains deep penetration at high shot density
- Intersects more natural fractures
PURE Perforating System for Clean Perforations
"Dynamic underbalance" technique for increased productivity
Minimize or eliminate perforation damage and increase productivity
PURE Perforating for Ultimate Reservoir Exploitation system optimizes the well dynamic underbalance—the transient underbalance just after creation of the perforation cavity. The software specifies a unique perforating system and optimum completion process. This controls the optimum dynamic underbalance rather than relying on the estimated reservoir pressure. This technique has been successfully performed in hard- and soft-rock formations, oil and gas reservoirs, and sandstones and carbonates.
Improve operating efficiency
An Alaskan water injection well was performing below expectations. The 90 ft of perforations were taking 17,500 B/D. Analysis of the well and reservoir conditions by PURE design software resulted in a job design using 3 3/8-in. guns and PowerJet deep penetrating shaped charges.Although only a 20-ft section was perforated, the injection rate increased to 25,000 B/D. The injection pressure remained approximately the same or slightly lower. The injection profile shows clearly the PURE perforations were taking 93% of the total flow for an improvement of 493% in the contribution rate. Two low-permeability (1-mD) gas wells in the Weber formation of Wyoming were perforated with PURE technology at initial overbalances of 3000 and 3700 psi. Both wells flowed naturally at 5.5 and 3.8 MMscf/D, respectively, without the acid stimulation usually needed to obtain clean perforations. The wells were tubing-conveyed perforating permanent completions.
Benefits
- Minimize or eliminate perforation damage and increase productivity
- Enhance acidizing and hydraulic fracturing operations and treatment results
- Minimize disruption of the cement/sandface hydraulic bond
HSD High Shot Density Gun Systems
HSD High Shot Density guns feature increased shot density, optimum phasing patterns, and the largest high-performance charges available for natural, stimulated, and sand control completions. HSD guns use expendable, retrievable carriers, which means that once the gun system has been used, it is retrieved and disposed of. Deployment is primarily on wireline cable or tubing. Tractor conveyance can be used in deviated wells.
Port Plug Guns and HEGS High-Efficiency Gun Systems
Port Plug guns shoot the charges through replaceable plugs in a reusable gun carrier and feature highly flexible multiple-gun selectivity for remote operations, enabling the perforation of large intervals with minimal hardware.
OrientXact Tubing-Conveyed Oriented Perforating System
Precise orientation and confirmation technology
Maximize production
OrientXact tubing-conveyed oriented perforating system decreases costs and improves productivity with less sand production. Oriented perforating is an innovative solution for low-debris perforating in horizontal and highly deviated wells.
Prevent sand
The system minimizes tunnel diameter in the formation. This increases the strength of the tunnel and the number of effective perforating tunnels. Reduces pressure drawdown across perforated intervals and flow rate per perforation.
Improve performance
OrientXact uses PowerJet Plus low-debris, deep penetrating, steel-cased, weighted shaped charges. These charges minimize perforation damage with more stability during drawdown and depletion.
Gain from the experience
Schlumberger developed this technology at operator request. In the operator's North Sea wells, previous oriented perforating was as much as 45° out of the desired orientation; productivity decreased.
In just five months, Schlumberger engineers designed, tested and deployed a system to perforate in an aligned and oriented fashion while preventing sand production and maintaining productivity.
Realize accurate orientation
Successfully tested and qualified in dogleg severities as high as 10° per 100 ft. Achieve overall orientation accuracy within 10° in a wellbore independent of length or tortuosity.
Benefits
- Increase productivity
- Prevent sand production
- Reduce costs
- Achieve single-trip oriented perforating of long intervals
- Achieve larger effective wellbore radius
Frac Gun Perforating Systems
Frac Gun perforating systems are engineered for the fracture stimulation of wells, with additional applications in slimhole wells, sand control operations,
